Tracking Tornadoes Over Time and Preparing
Your Property with Wells Lawn Care

Indiana has already experienced several tornadoes this year, with more likely to come. This isn’t unusual, as Indiana sits on the far northeastern edge of “Tornado Alley.” Tornadoes draw their energy from the clash between cooler, drier Canadian air and warm, humid air from the Gulf of Mexico. The sharper the contrast in temperature and humidity, the greater the potential for severe weather, including tornadoes. That’s why these storms are most common in the spring, though autumn tornadoes have become increasingly frequent in recent years.
To explore past tornado activity in our area, the Midwestern Regional Climate Center (MRCC) offers a Tornado Tracks Tool. It lets users track the estimated paths of tornadoes from 1950 through 2023. Filters allow you to search by tornado strength, date range, month, and whether any injuries or fatalities occurred. Click on any tornado icon to reveal detailed information. If you recall a tornado from years ago that left a lasting impression, this is a great way to see what the official records say about it.
The National Weather Service also provides a useful tool for visualizing the climatology of severe weather events, including tornadoes, hail, and high winds, across the country (explore the map here). Like the MRCC tool, this resource is updated through 2023.
For more recent storm data, the Southern Regional Climate Center (SRCC) offers an interactive map similar to the MRCC’s, but with added data from the Storm Prediction Center (SPC). This tool includes a wider variety of weather events, such as droughts, floods, wildfires, hail, hurricanes, and thunderstorms, and allows users to zoom in by region, customize filters, and view additional information in a detailed event table.
While tornadoes and other extreme weather events are serious and potentially dangerous, reflecting on past storms can also offer insights and even a sense of shared history. Tools like these provide an engaging way to learn how individual storms compare to those across the region.
